For the last few days, during my morning walks, I have been treated to several Mockingbirds doing their thing. They sing from above me on the telephone wires; they sing in the trees; they sing from the mailboxes. It’s great to stand and watch them go through their repertoire and it seems to vary each time. I’ve got to say that this is probably one of my favorite songbirds. Maybe because it is a combination of all of the songbirds!
One of my wife’s friends calls it ‘The Devil Bird’ because of its habit of singing on nights with a full moon. One could say that she is not fond of the late night shows that this bird tends to give. She wants it, and the crickets, to be quiet and sleep when it is dark! I sincerely doubt that she’ll get her wish!

Beautiful shot of an even more beautiful bird.
Whenever I see pictures of wildlife I am reminded of what einstien said
“There are two ways to live life, as if everything is a miracle, or nothing is a miracle”
I’ll take the first approach

Great shot my friend
Last August my dad passed away. His favorite bird was the mockingbird, and when I stayed at his house to help sort through decades’ worth of possessions, I’d hear that beautiful songbird at 3 a.m.! In a strange way, it was a comforting song. Pretty amazing, that it’s a copycat of any bird it hears, like a tape recorder that never shuts off. This is a clear, crisp photo, Paul! What lens did you use? I love the greenish blurred background. Very nice!
That one seems to be a redbreast robin, or? They are not only beautiful to watch, but also to listen to – sometimes their songs sound a bit melancholic. Makes me always aware that photography captures only a part of the surrounding world…
Bonnie: This was shot with my Tamron 200-500 @500mm. Actually, this mockingbird was very close to me. He was probably within 20-30 feet. Perhaps just a little bit more. He was sitting amongst the branches of a pine tree, which is where the streaky green background comes from.
After I took the picture, I just stood there, watched, and listened for a while until he/she decided that the show was over. I thanked him/her and then moved on.
I have to say, I’ve noticed the mockingbirds being more noticeable this year. It seems like everywhere I go they’re putting on a bigger show than in the past. It must be the year of the mockingbird. This one’s a beauty!!
