No, this is not a shot from the TV show Baywatch. Pamela Anderson was nowhere to be found. I looked! Perhaps she’s in Finland planning to open her chain of strip clubs, called Lapland! Heck, she even has a blog … if you take it!
These are real lifeguards, responsible for keeping the public safe along Carolina Beach. Safe from the ocean, as well as themselves! Take a close look; they’re all KIDS!
Well, who else would have the endurance to be a lifeguard? I’m getting old!

They were getting ready to race each other. In this race, timing was everything. They had to be quick to get out of the sand, turn, and race to a set of sticks and pick one up. Each time, a few more got eliminated until there were only 2 left. It was fun to watch.

I love your beach shots Paul. Brings back childhood memories of topsail beach. Thanks for sharing.
You know why I like this post…it’s such a sweet reminder of all the stages of life and how we should live each stage at its fullest.
Every year there is a huge Lifeguard competition in Cape May in New Jersey. It’s pretty serious stuff to these young men and women.
The surf off of Cape May can get really tricky making the job of lifeguard there is very demanding and dangerous. They are frequently called upon to perform their duties. Thank God they are there!
In 2003 the USLA (United Stated Lifesaving Asscioation) National Championship was held in Cape May.
I wonder if they were training for the competition?
Well, it’s only Finnland…but still too close to Sweden (where I currently live). No, thanks a lot, but you can have that blond…öh… well, THAT blonde back.
Actually somebody just edited the corresponding entry in Wikipedia to name the Lapland province the “Region of Lapdance”. Ha, ha…must be somebody with the sparkling humor of a 14 year old – or that of Pamela Anderson.
Anyway, nice shots and a nice, obviously well-life-guarded, beach…
That shot of them lying down certainly makes you start guessing what the heck they are doing (even with the story behind it!)
Love this series and the spirit of our youthful protectors.
