It was 5:20 AM and I had just arrived at Wrightsville Beach. I thought for sure that I’d be the only one there at that time of morning. As I approached the beach, I saw this lifeguard tower. I just loved the graphical nature of this shot. The deep blue tones are from shooting with my white balance set to daylight, which is where I usually keep it, and the fact that in the early morning and through night, most of the available light is in the blue wavelength. I didn’t add any color at all. This is how it came out of the camera.

As I made it around the tower, I found that I wasn’t alone. There was an amorous couple on the beach who thought that they were alone, too! ;-)

I happened to look up into Tower #8 and happen to see that it doubled as a high rise, low-rent room for the night!

  1. Ah, youth and to be younger again. I don’t think I’d be publicly affectionate on the beach at my age, but I’d be willing to sleep up in that Tower #8. I might just pay for it the next morning for awhile before the muscles loosened up again, though.

  2. Micki: I can’t imagine what my back and legs would feel like after a night in Tower #8! That is, if they would ‘feel’ at all! :-) Ouch! As for being publicly affectionate on the beach, I could handle that to a certain degree. I’m always aware that there are kids around, being a parent and all. :-)

  3. Great 1st image of tower #8 Paul; the color and starkness of its environment give it an abstract and almost surrealistic quality.
    Excellent work!

  4. GeeWizz, can’t a guy grab a quick nap in a life guard tower in the middle of a deserted beach without being photographed by the Paparazzi? :-)

I agree with John, the blue color of the first shot really makes it.

For me theres a huge sense of isolation in the top image, one that provides a sense of solitude and separation from the rest of humanity in it’s vacancy. Amorous couples are great fun to accidently walk upon and find as they produce all sorts of exclamations in diving for cover or clothes! Yep walked into a few similar scene myself! 8)
