I just finished reading Anita’s post, Pooped and preoccupied. Oh how well I remember the rigors of selling a home. What a hassle to keep it clean for such a long period of time. It’s hard to be comfortable in your own home.

I’m pooped and preoccupied myself, but for a different reason. As you know, I’m gearing up to head south to Charleston, SC to work. I’ve already visited Charleston, selected an apartment, gotten all of my ducks in a row, etc. Now, I’m trying take care of the home front. Tony’s going to a new school this year, which is about 36 miles one-way from home. Normally, my wife and I would split the duties. She’d do mornings; I’d take the afternoon drive. She likes to work late. I don’t! :-) Now, she’s going to have to do both sides. In addition to all of the other things that I do around the house.

Between July 14 and July 27th I drove over 2,100 miles going to basketball tournaments. The first one in Morgantown, WV, the next in Orlando, FL. I’ve not been home a lot. Add to that I’ve been walking 5+ miles/day, six days/week, giving me about 30 miles/week walking … always in the morning, my normal shooting time! My camera is becoming a stranger to me. I took it with me everywhere, but was a bit tired and not feeling very creative, to be honest. I think that I’ve taken about 60 pictures in 2 weeks.

I think that the gears are about to shift quickly. In order to fight the potential boredom in the evening, I imagine that my day will be : Get up early and walk my 4-6 miles. Get ready for work. Work until about 5 or 6. Come home, change, grab a bite to eat. Go out and explore Charleston.

So, in the coming weeks, starting August 4th, I should be back pretty regularly … at least I hope so!

Note: The map is my weekly commute home: 206 miles from Charleston to Charlotte.

  1. So your weekly commute is even longer than ours. We are traveling only 130 miles each way. With your travel and the trips to Tony’s school, you guys will put a lot of miles on your cars. I know you will find a way to make this work, but it sounds like a strain on everyone. And, goodness, with all that exercise you will get into great shape. Besides, you will spot all sorts of wonderful photo opportunities and when you do begin shooting again, look out!

It sounds as though you will beat me “back”. Our moving day is Aug 11 and I expect nothing but full chaos until then. Turning our house here over to a property manager for rental is going to be a strange experience, but we have gotten some excellent recommendations and think we will be in good hands (shades of Allstate) and that the place will be well watched over and taken care of. Plus, we will down here frequently to keep an eye on things and we have some wonderfully “nosy” neighbors.

  2. Anita, it’s going to be a bit difficult, but I hope that there is some growth in this for all of us. I think that it will allow Tony to get closer to my wife. He and I are already very close as we spend so much time together. On the other hand, he and my wife don’t spend much time together. So, it will be good.

As for me, I don’t like to spend a lot of time away from my family. I never have. I start to feel pretty anxious about it. Hopefully, this will be an opportunity for growth for me as well.

Either way, we’re going through it. Good luck on your move and getting your rental together!

  3. YIKES! You really are in a state of upheaval. It must be so nearly overwhelming to keep up with it all.

  4. Good luck with everything! Looks as if you’re mentally prepared as much as it is possible. This weekend commuting thingy will certainly be a change for you and your family – but I’m sure you will cope. Just make sure that you make good use of those precious weekends…

And there will certainly be a lot of great photographic opportunities in those new developments.

  5. Thomas, there are but a few things left to do. Today I signed up for electrical service as well as Internet/cable. The cable I don’t care about, the Internet … well, gotta have it! :-)

I still need furniture and, when I get into town, food. My first few days will be in an extended stay hotel (small kitchen, stove, full sized refrigerator, etc). That will be Sunday – Thursday. Friday, the day I return home, my apartment will be ready. I’m ready to get things started so that I can get into the groove of things.
