Careful where you sit!
It’s that great time of year! it’s Autumn. At least here, the mornings are starting to become ‘crisp’; the evenings are cool and breezy; the shadows are long and inviting.
I’m starting to feel an itch to get back to North Carolina and get into the mountains! Here, most of the trees are either pine or palmetto, neither of which will change colors in the fall. 
I need deciduous trees, streams, and crisp mountain air! The beach cannot hold a candle to the mountains in the fall.
Yikes! It’s the end of September! I need to get moving!!!
By the away, that bench in the first picture was in need of some serious repair. It is leaning and that is no Photoshop trickery nor lens distortion!!! I had considered taking a seat there, but upon closer inspection, decided that it was not such a good idea! Had I sat there, I would have been looking up at the sky in short order, on my back in the grass.

This is my favorite time of year. The temperatures I love, the crispness to the air you describe, the foggy mornings – I just wish it lasted about 6 months longer.
I’ll be back in North Carolina in mid October – is that a good time for fall colour? Hadn’t given that any thought really – maybe I should consider packing more gear! I have one free weekend…
Fall is definitely in the air, although we are having a mini-monsoon here for the next few days.
I love all manner of benches. I love the light in the second photo.
@Gordon: That is the perfect time of year for the leaves. They should be at their peak of color, assuming that we don’t get a lot of rain. The rain simply knocks them to the ground and that’s that! I plan to go up in mid-October. Last year, the leaves didn’t start to turn until late October because we had drought conditions throughout the whole year. Paul, I feel with you. And to make you a bit envious: how about a great coastline AND fall colors and everything? Welcome to Sweden!
@Thomas: That, indeed, would be an ideal combination!
@Thomas – sounds like North Carolina
Paul – is there much fall colour in the Piedmont area, or do you really have to head out beyond Asheville? I had a great time out there last month but it is a bit of a trek on your own for a weekend – think it was about 5 hours driving last time.
@Gordon: There is fall color in the Piedmont area, to be sure, but it occurs a week or two later. Here in Charlotte, we are starting to see some very small color changes on the occasional bush here and there. Full color will probably happen around late October, early November in the Piedmont.
Unfortunately, if you’re going to Cary again, that’s pretty far east. All of the elevations are 3.5 or 4 hours west of you. I had thought that you could hit the parkway in Fancy Gap, VA, but that’s about the same distance.
It also sounds like gasoline is quite the rare commodity around those parts. Might be sticking closer to home.
