Edgy?

The other day, in response to this post, Laurie said:

I like to think I am versatile although I don’t show a lot of my more edgy stuff on my blog. I tend to stick to a fairly subdued format. I also don’t post too much of my professional body of work online for the public. Not sure why, but I just don’t. –Laurie

I’d never considered this, on a personal level. I pretty much show what I shoot. This is certainly not to knock Laurie. I like her work and visit her blog every day, but now she has me very curious about what she’s not showing and I want to see more. :-)

I wonder what is meant by edgy. Is it experimental? Trying new techniques? Working with unfamiliar subjects? Not showing those things that you think no one else would be interested in?

Not much to say about it. Just curious. Whether you have a blog or not, are there any types of pictures that you do not share with friends, family, the public? If so, why don’t you show them?

What an interesting question! I know that I do some self-editing, but it’s not a philosophy or policy that I can sum up neatly. For example, I am aware that I don’t post photos that are fully representative of some subjects and I tend to be embarrased about some experiments that I just bury in the files until I have more of a handle on where I am headed. Thanks for stirring my curiousity.

I don’t show family or holiday snapshots with recognisable people in my public blog. Those photos only serve as a crouch for my memory, to recall personal events, so I guess they wouldn’t be interesting for a lot of people. And it would be extremly unfair to those people who haven’t fled when I grabbed my camera… ;)

  3. Hmm … I show pretty much whatever I do. The exception are recognizable people whom I have not asked for permission. In my situation, one image per day, shot that day, every day, you can’t be too picky. But, yes, normally I shoot until I either run out of opportunities or have at least one safe bet. Then I normally begin to experiment, and when I see at least some merit in the image, I’ll post it.
