I’ve become quite found of the NY Times One in 8 million stories. So much so that I’d like to try my hand at something similar.
Is this a Flash site? Is there something in Mac-land that would allow me to do something like this, combining photos and audio into such a presentation. I think that it really enhances the overall power of the images.
Chris Klug asked a good question: Why not just use Flash? Well, umm, because like all of the rest of Adobe’s software, it’s in the $699 range and I don’t have that kind of money to release to ‘play around’.
Thanks for your input.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Why don’t you just use Flash? Or is my mind in such a state this Friday that I’m missing your point?
@Chris: $$$!
Dude, I just read ‘In Retrospect.’ It was wonderful. Suggestion: why don’t you start writing a book at night, after work. Maybe it’s a book much like In Retrospect, but fictional. You know, with print-on-demand, you could mock up a book and send it to a publisher or an agent to try to get it published. Maybe that’s what you do next.
Not sure if this would meet your needs, but you might try Fotomagico to create the slides show, complete with wipes, pans, and audio, then export to a QuickTime movie. There’s a program called VisualHub (no longer supported by the original author, but gone to open source) that I’ve used for converted video files from one type to another. I’ve noticed that VisualHub has a QT->Flash conversion mode.
Paul, Didn’t Apples iLife applications come with your MacBook Pro? I’m thinking you could do something similar using iPhoto, iMovie and/or iWeb. It could be a slideshow with audio or even a video of photos with sequenced audio.
You might want to check out FotoMagico as well.
Just some low/no cost thoughts. Have a good weekend.
Yeah, I liked the latest one, about Buster English who was growing vegetables in the middle of NYC, a very warm portrait.
Almost everyone that makes this type of multi-media work uses Final Cut Pro but you could do several things to see if it fits your workflow, your mission and your budget. You could download a trail of FCP, your could take a peek at Final Cut Express or your could explore iMovie.
Also, please study the site: http://www.mediastorm.com
You could take a one hour class at the apple store to see if FCP is for you as well. It’s a one on one lesson with a pro.
In lieu of taking a class at a entity such as media storm, you could spend 25 bux at lynda.com whereas they have a large handful of classes for the s/w I mention above.
Best,
You should also visit Ed’s wife’s site at: http://www.youtube.com/user/talkingeyesmedia (youtube site)
But really spend a LOT of time at media storm. Look at their work, it’s the, IMO, benchmark for Multimedia. Check out all their stories, and also watch the MM work by their students. This would be money I would spend in a moment if I didn’t live on a fixed budget.
Paul I check in on that site a lot also and am doing a couple of projects along the same lines only using After Effects or FCP which is how I believe is how it is done for the NYT.
Have you ever thought about doing a trade, or just asking for help on that part of your project. Community is a good thing sometimes.
