This evening on the way home from work it was raining. As I neared home, I noticed a break in the clouds, just as the sun was about to set. I stopped by the grocery store to get something to make for dinner. I didn’t stay long.

As I entered the checkout line, I noticed that the clouds had cleared and the sun was shining. I could tell because it was beaming beautifully on several of the customer’s faces. I knew that I would want to take a few photos.

I live right around the corner from the store, about 1 mile away. I hustled back to the apartment, watching the light all the way. It was changing into that beautiful after-storm light. When I got near the parking lot, I noticed that there were all sorts of puddles in the child care center parking lot across the street. I quickly pulled in and started looking at those beautiful reflections of the sky. I decided right then an there that I wanted to use the camera on my new cell phone, an LG ENV@3.

My other cell phone, which I had had for 3 years, finally died a week or two ago. That camera was really crappy and had less than 1 MP. The new one, has 3 MP. I could have grabbed my D300 from the trunk, but I wanted to see what this camera could do.

As I said, I had stopped at the grocery store and was pretty hungry, but hunger takes a back seat to this type of light … heck, to any type of light. You know what it’s like!

Well … the shots that I made of the puddles didn’t come out well. The lens is a bit too wide and doesn’t focus closely enough. Oh well. Also, my vision, up close, without reading glasses is not so good so I couldn’t really tell if it had focused or not. Ah, the pleasures of getting old! Further, it’s a flip phone and although the camera photo looks horizontal in the outside display, it’s really vertical and you only see about 2/3 of what you’re really going to get. Next time, I’ll need to open it up to see the real deal.

Anyway, I got a couple of really nice shots that I liked and was very pleased. I took 33 shots and got two that I liked. A great haul, in my opinion, especially given that I couldn’t really see what I was doing. :-)

  1. Paul, You mean you couldn’t find a cell phone that shoots film? ;-) Wonderful colors and clouds! Did you do post-processing with these? Just goes to prove at least for the web, it’s not all about the MP’s.

    • I know! I was quite disappointed that I could find the film version! I did have to do a bit of post processing because the colors looked a bit flat, not at all like they did when I was taking the photo. They were brilliant. I had to crop a bit too. 3 MP is not bad for web stuff, to be sure!

  2. The compositions you’ve chosen works well, both in portrait as in landscape format – my favourite is the landscape one – but with the described difficulties it was probable more the art of cropping that led to those good results. For this kind of images the resolution of the sensor is the least limitation and can be compensated for with photoshop skills. The old truth: f8 and being there, this is what truly counts (and postponing pure physiological needs, of course)

  3. Scenes many people miss out on or shrug off cause the photographer to get all excited and start scurrying about with a camera, a strange look forms on our face, we focus on the light causing us to trip over large objects, we go hungry, we stand in traffic or other dangerous situations, we almost wet our pants trying to hold it. I love stories like this! Helps me to feel sane. :-)

I see why you got excited. Wonderful display of light and for such a short period of time. We also carry a camera (or two) with us at all times.

  4. Not bad, your LG gets an OK stamp. :)

Interesting that you shot a bunch of power lines, might these have been the same as those Chris shot? Probably not, but an interesting coincident anyway, thinking of those river shoots you and Earl made last week, without knowing you were shooting the same river. Everything is nested. :)

  5. Hey, look: colors! ;)

That is a real change to the last series of black and white shots (not that I didn’t enjoy them). Could to know that cameras in cell phone are still not real. Justifies my thoughts that currently play constantly with a micro four thirds…

  6. Amazing sky Paul. How could one not photograph this?!
