No guarantees, but just some thoughts. First, I’m really surprised that SoFoBoMo is upon us again. OK, the ideas:
- A Journey of 100 miles: My most ambitious thought. Photos taken will walking 100 miles within about 25 days. It need not be 100 different miles. It can be the same two miles, done 50 times. My round trip to and from the car is 1 mile, so 20 miles covered in 20 work days. I just need 80 more on the weekends and through the week. If I don’t make the 100, then it could be called While Walking.
- On the way in: I have many opportunities to take photos during my 10 minute walk to work. There’s lot to see. On the way out is an option, too.
- 8:40 – 9:00 AM: Each morning, I arrive downtown at about 8:30, by the time that I make it to the office building, it’s 8:40 AM. I grab a seat at a table and just watch the people hurry in, head down, on their way to the office. Again, lots of opportunities for photos.
Of course, I’m thinking Leica and B&W film all the way. More thoughts. That’s about it for the moment. Will you participate this year and, if so, do you have any plans just yet?

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I will participate this year again. I’m thinking of photographing fairgrounds in the area. There is some amazing architecture in some of them, and if I catch a fair in progress, that makes it even better. It’s a project I thought of last year, and I think I’m going to try it, if I don’t get sidetracked.
I’m probably using film also this year. A Mamyia 645 I bought late last summer and I’ve used a lot. Purely black and white, scanned on the computer.
I like the 100 miles idea, I may have to “borrow” that in the future. Good luck.
Steve: Consider the idea, Public Domain!
That is the one that I really want to do. It falls in line with my Tai Chi and new way of thinking. I know that I can do it, I may just have to carve the time out in odd ways.
I plan on it but it will be later in the summer for me after I recover from knee replacement. I have been thinking about doing hands first all women with rings and tattoos. Now maybe I may include men, I not sure yet.
Don, that sounds like a great idea. I’ve seen many interesting tattoos on people as I walk through downtown Charlotte. That would be fascinating. The other day I saw a lady with an entire paragraph written on her chest, starting just below the collarbone. I wanted to stop and read it, but figured that would be ‘inappropriate’.
She was well endowed, too.
Yup. Braddock Pa. Mamiya 645e. One day, morning until sunset. Don’t know the film yet, though, or whether it will be color or b&w.
Paul, I’m still trying to decide about participating…probably will. No thoughts on subject matter. It looks like you’ve got some good ideas for this year.
A few different ideas, and yes, I will be participating.
First ideas is “Looking through a rearview mirror”
Second idea is Landscapes From western Prairie to Eastern forests ( a trip moving my son to his new home)
Third idea is “sun and moon”
Of course I might throw these all away if something special comes along. It could be that I end up doing more than one project during the 31 days.
All will be in colour using a digital Sony.
I know how that goes. Ideas come and go and there’s no need to commit too early.
I’ve not participated before but will think about it. Seems like a daunting project. I like your ideas so hope you keep listening to the creative voice inside.
Monte: It is a daunting task, to be sure, but a fun one, I think. The book can be as simple as you like. Some people do 2 or 3 books in the time specified. I like add words and photos, so mine take a bit longer. There’s no wrong way to do it. It’s just about getting it done. Challenging yourself, so to speak.
In all honesty I need the challenge.
Nope, not for me. Makes the (photographic) life too business-like for me, I don’t need another deadline. But I certainly look forward to browsing through all the SoFoBoMos… Will be a joy on a rainy day!
I will definitely participate, but have no idea what I will be doing. Come to think of it, I never seem to know until the last minute. Why should this year be any different. This challenge always strikes fear in my heart and I go through at least two or three panic phases. But, I find it an invaluable growth experience. I love your ideas and always anticipate hearing which one will be the choice.
“I love your ideas and always anticipate hearing which one will be the choice.”
LOL! I always anticipate what it will be, too!
I’m sure that a few more ideas will pop up to replace/augment those. We’ll see.
Oh, I will definitely participate again (signed up quite some time ago). The simple reason is that I did *not* make another book since last sofobomo – procrastinating and all this – so for me it’s good to have such a challenge again.
And btw – that b&w image of yours is very fine. Resonates well with your words of hurrying people.
Hi Paul,
you have an interesting blog here and I’ve enjoyed your SoFoBoMo posts a great deal. This will be my 1st year participating so I hope I manage it all in time, I’ve not made a book before. I’m thinking of doing something underwater, fish, marine life, wrecks , maybe a mixture, not fully decided yet.
