Who says that you have to have all kinds of umbrellas, soft boxes, diffusers and whatnot to make a good portrait? One of my favorite portrait photographers is Cheryl Jacobs. I simply love her work and she uses only available light and film!
I didn’t use film for this shot because, quite frankly, it was a bit too dark in The Peaceful Dragon. I shot this at ISO 6400 and converted it to black and white. The cool thing about getting to take these shots is that I was, for the most part, invisible. It was the in-between time of the workshop this weekend and I was dressed like everyone else at The Peaceful Dragon, black, on black. For this photo, I was pressed against a display case near the entrance to the large studio. I was waiting for the demo participants to enter studio so that I could photograph them.
As I was waiting, I noticed that Tim had his game face on. This is a rare expression for him, as he is usually smiling, laughing, and having something funny to say. However, as you can see, at this time there is nothing but focus. It was an unusual side of him to see and I thought that it made for a great moment. Not to mention that the sword and the stark lighting makes him look bad ass!
Portraiture is not about lights, camera, or maybe even action, it’s about a certain moment. I was fortunate to be able to capture a couple of those moments this weekend.
