7 comments on “Tricky Spammers

  1. A while ago I asked myself the same question. The slightly tricky long answer is on my blog. The short answer: they want to get one approved comment to get around the “moderate first comment only” line of defence.

    • I’m going to read your blog entry; however, I do have that checkbox checked saying that they have to have a previously approved comment, but it still gets through, so I’m not sure what’s going on with WordPress.

  2. I have only had one of those over the years, but don’t want to heap praise on Blogger and jinx myself. I, too, plan to read Andreas’ post. I hope you find a fix soon. What an aggravation.

  3. No problem so far, but I have been doing this less than a year and my readership is not in Andreas’ league. So either the spam filter is working or I’m just not getting it.

    • They just haven’t found you, yet. Don’t worry! They will, of this you can be sure. :)

  4. Paul, I’ve seen a few but I’m very careful these days about approving that first comment by someone…as Andreas states, once that first one is approved the door is open for them. Also I’ve found, in my case, Akismet is catching a good many of them?

    • Thanks, Earl. I was using Spam Karma 2, but just enabled Akismet. It seems to catch those, too, but for whatever reason, they are being flagged as spam, but still show up. Not sure what I have misconfigured with Akismet.
