I have received my first book, 2004 – Renaissance – Returning to what I love, my first of 7 themed photography books containing selected photos, by year, for the years 2004, 2006-2011. As I noted in a previous post, in 2005, I was missing in action.
On the suggestion of Chuck, I ordered my book from MyPublisher. I downloaded their software, assembled the book, uploaded the book, paid for it, and about 10 days later, I had the book in my hands.
This book was small, having only 13 physical pages. MyPublisher indicates that the book price stated, for this size, $34.75, includes 20 pages. The cover and the back cover are counted as pages, as well. It would be more accurate to say includes 20 ‘sides’, and 10 physical pages, so, one book with 9 pages + front and back cover. 
Also, the last page of the book, right before the back cover, contains the MyPublisher logo. This ‘page’ (side), comes at no extra cost. LOL
My total cost was 34.75 + 4.95 (5 additional pages) + 10.99 shipping = $50.69, with a coupon, I paid about $42.
The book came in a box emblazoned with the MyPublisher logo. Inside, the book was wrapped in plastic and there was crumpled brown paper to protect it from movement. When I opened the book, I was pleased with the contents. As the book had a mixture of B&W prints as well as color, I was certainly interested to see how they came out.
The B&W prints were faithfully reproduced, having deep (enough) blacks and nice highlights and everything between. The color prints were very nice as well. Having printed my son’s wedding book, I learned that I need to add just a little of additional exposure, about 1/2 stop, to what I think looks right on the screen as well as knock down my monitor brightness to about 1/2. This makes it come out well on the printed page. Printed, all of the photos seemed properly exposed. I was very pleased indeed. This was better than the Blurb book that I did for the wedding. Also, I felt that the software was easier to use and the photos more accurate compared to what I uploaded.
I think that their shipping seems to be a little pricy, $10.99 for FedEx shipping. I’m not sure what they call the type of shipping, but FedEx brings it to your post office and the PO takes it the rest of the way. At least you get Saturday delivery!
It feels good to have started on this project. My next book, 2006 – Back To Life, has been printed and will probably ship tomorrow. It has more pages and has my buddy, Hobbs, on the cover. I’m sure that he’ll like it.
Today, I start working on 2007 – The Next Step – Geez! I feel like Anita with all of these projects standing before me!

I was somewhat disappointed with my Blurb book, but I can probably attribute that to my own mistakes. Lots of the photos were a bit too dark, when then looked fine on my monitor; however, with MyPublisher, everything came out as expected. I kind of held my breath there for a bit, but when I saw it, I was seriously pleased. So, at least for this series of books, I’m sticking with MyPublisher.
Good insight into another publisher Paul. So far I only have experience with Apple’s books, which are pretty darn nice and a competitive price. I am also curious how the new LR4 type books are.

I have had a book idea on my mind now that I have 5 years of “Top 10s” under my belt – a book of 50 images every 5 years to sit around in someone’s basement someday.
Now, that is a grand idea. Your legacy!

Just browsed through the 2006 book. Phantastic body of work! That photo of Hobbs on the front is almost frightening…
It’s a bit of a pity that the book is quite small when you watch it on the mypublisher site. And unfortunately, their shipping to Europe is even more pricey than the prices for shipping within the US. I wonder what the European alternatives are (in addition to the Apple books)… Mental note to myself: need to investigate.
