Sometimes one need not go to exotic destinations to find a photographic subject. I pass this field every day on my walk. It is right across the street from my apartment.

The other day, I decided to put the D700 on the tripod and take a few shots and play with the depth of field. I spent only short time there as it was evening, rather warm, the insects were hungry and I was what was on the menu.

Nice field to have so close by and nice shots Paul, especially the b&w one. Nice tonal range.

Thanks, Cedric.
Nice. Sometimes our best subjects are the ones we see every day.

Yep. Not much cost of travel for this one.
Paul, I like that first photo — has a bit of a surreal feel to it with the shallow DOF.

Thanks, Earl. It was interesting to be looking at such a shallow depth of field. I hadn’t taken the D700 outside for a few weeks.
The treatment on the first shot’s excellent, Paul with the sepia toning. Good subject for it. Love the DOF this shallow.

It is nice to have places like this nearby and it’s nice that we experience it. I like the close-up of the flowers and the bug.

Both shots excellent but there is something about the first one- the timeless look of the image without color, the focus looked on the middle tree of the three- that speaks to this viewer.
The second one upon closer inspection is fascinating with the sharpness falling away right above the insect’s body, very nice, and hard to do considering the chewing that the insects were probably doing to you while you were setting up the shot.
Love the macro shot! The sepia one doesn’t really do it for me, to be honest. It’s quite out-competed by the fresh greens, the nice whites and the great composition of the macro. DOF is phantastic!

If there is one thing that will keep me out of my local fields, it is being on the menu!

I like both shots, Paul, but the macro is stunning. I’m a sucker for bug shots.

Ken. I’m rather a fan of bugs, myself … save for when they are using me as a buffet line!
Lovely shot; when did you get the D700? I must have missed that. What do you think?
