I don't know if i'm a weird kind of introvert or if weddings are different in ireland but i LOVE shooting weddings, i far prefer to be a photographer in a situation where people know what my job is and are happy to let me do it even if it involves interacting with them, far more than say approaching a stranger in the street. It's the business side of things that stops me from doing it more often - having to get out there and say "I'm fantastic, look at me, give me your money!" just goes against everything I feel is right. I always thought it was down to being scottish, or british, where boastfulness is the absolute peak of rudeness, and heaven forbid you should ever be confident about something. I wonder how much of these personality traits we are born with, and how much is impressed on us through society. But that's probably a discussion beyond a photography blog ;)

As a blues fan myself, I second that idea Paul. Are you saying you prefer the venue to be filled with smoke?? Or is that a typo? :-) I might even be able to do metal, as long as I had ear plugs, which I have seen many concert photographers wearing.

I just discovered it myself about a month ago Paul. I like it. It also gives you little stats like who clicked through to the links that are left, but I don't know if those are visible to everyone. It is a nice way of returning the favor to people leaving comments.

Since I lack the social skills necessary to be good at portrait and wedding photography, I've concentrated on nature and other stuff to occupy myself. But weddings and such are for those photographers whose income is dependent on being at ease with others and in large groups. It comes easy for the best of them, but not for a lot of us.
I have photographed my wife's (classical) concerts and rehearsals and that was a lot of fun. Difficult, but fun.

I like my DSLR mainly for the depth of field control that I get with the various lenses. With the P&S, I sometimes get tired of that infinite depth of field. Give me blur!!! As for the tripod, it's rare that I dislike it, but sometimes it can be annoying, but I'm usually glad that I brought it along.

You sound very prepared, Anita. I had extra cameras, but not an extra DSLR. You don't know how close I was from buying a used Nikon D90, just to have a back up. So very close. LOL - It felt really good feeling the heft of the D300 in my hands again and, as you said, entering that getting-to-know-you phase again. We are on pretty familiar terms, now, that D300 and I. I think that she needs a name. I shall have to consider that ... =)

Mark, you make a good point about event photography. I think that I could photograph bands, if I like their particular type of music. For example, I'd love to spend some time photographing local Blues bands, as long as the venue was NOT smoke-filled, which would probably not be an issue as smoking is not allowed indoors in Charlotte and surrounding areas; however, it is still allowed in places far away from Charlotte, such as Brevard. However, if I were tasked to shoot, say some Metal music, that would not be pleasurable at all. :D

I think that concert photography would allow me to be in a 'bubble', so to speak. I wouldn't have to interact with the crowd, whereas in a wedding, you are second in line as far as attention and everyone wants a piece of you, or to tell you what to do.

Wedding photography would be my worst nightmare, so I admire those that are good at it and enjoy it. They can have it! :-) However, I think I would enjoy concert and band photography, but only to a point. Like you, as soon as I get my dose of people, I tend to need some time away.

As freeing as it is to shoot without a tripod, there is a welcomed feeling of control and concentration that seems to come back when we use it again. Definitely a love-hate relationship! Same with DSLRs - although I like my point and shoots for their simplicity and light weight, I still don't feel I compose as intently with them.
